Software Engineer
At Lightyear we are working on a family of power converters to convert solar energy from PV panels on vehicles to their batteries. The converter range consists of LV variants, HV variants and a multi-port variant that is able to convert energy from multiple solar panels to both LV and HV batteries. By intelligently combining several functions, this topology allows for a reduction in component count and improvement in efficiency.
What will you do as a Software Engineer?
At Lightyear we are developing a full in vehicle solar energy system. In addition to the solar panels, this includes the power electronics to convert solar energy into useful energy for the vehicle as well as extensive data analytics to optimize our system per vehicle in a data driven way.
Specifically, you will:
Develop high-quality, autonomous firmware for our highly efficient power converters using (async) Rust.
Leverage modern real-time stream processing to monitor the performance of our solar panels and power converters, feeding data to real-time dashboards and our mobile app.
Ensure all development adheres to strict quality and safety processes (ISO 26262 compliant) as we prepare for prototype projects and small series production.
Take full ownership of your tasks: figure out the details, gather necessary context, research the domain, and deliver code that is truly production-ready before it even hits the review stage.
Actively participate in rigorous technical discussions within our small, highly intelligent team, logically defending your assumptions and architectural choices.
Work with our ISO processes and support continuous improvement of our quality landscape.
A day as a Software Engineer
You start your day syncing up with your tight-knit team consisting of electrical, software, and control engineers. You pick up a new feature request for the power converter firmware. Because you thrive on autonomy, you independently hunt down the necessary context, research the technical constraints, and map out a solution. You spend the morning writing clean, async Rust code.
After lunch, you join a whiteboard session where your recent architectural choices for the cloud-data stream processing system are heavily challenged by your peers. You enjoy this interaction—you confidently explain the exact assumptions you made and how they logically lead to your decision, embracing the mutual learnings the discussion brings. You finish your day refining a pull request, ensuring the code quality is so high that it breezes through the mandatory code, safety, and security reviews with barely any comments.
What do we expect from a Power Electronics Engineer?

BSc or above in Software Science, Electrical Engineering, or related studies
Experience with (deeply) embedded software
Experience with automotive quality and safety standards (specifically ISO 26262) is highly desired.
Experience with model based engineering is a plus.
Experience with control of power converters is a plus
Experience designing applications in a cloud-native environment and working with real-time stream processing systems is a plus
Strong proficiency in Rust, specifically writing asynchronous (async) Rust for both embedded firmware and cloud applications.
Exceptionally logical thinker who doesn't shy away from intellectual debate.

Detail-oriented with a strong sense of craftsmanship and pride in delivering flawless code.
