Working at Lightyear is a unique experience. You get the opportunity to work for a company with a pure and meaningful mission. A mission that will make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.

What will you do as a Principal Power Electronics Reliability Engineer?
Let's start off with some context. At Lightyear, we're developing Solar Electric Vehicles with a hyper-focus on efficiency. Given that hyper-focus, we're working on the most efficient and reliable powertrains.

Taking that even more deeply, you'll be responsible for guiding our team of Architects and Engineers in the reliability aspects of power electronics (semiconductors and passives). You will be working on the intersection of power electronics, thermal engineering, material science, and solid mechanics.
While the role is still quite fluid, you'll primarily work on:

  • Setting reliability targets for power electronics systems and components
  • Incorporating Design for Reliability into the company
  • Performing robustness tests
  • Lifetime predictions using FEM and analytical modeling
  • Troubleshoot the root causes of electrical components failure modes and report findings
  • PHM (part of R&D)
  • Developing partnerships with academia and industry
  • Developing our her reliability for power electronics sub-domain

For this role, you will have to go deep until you can explain the fundamental physics behind the failure mechanism. You will need to use data to drive your decisions. Besides that, a multi-domain view is key. Are you up for the challenge and would you consider it your mission to make sure our power electronics will be reliable? Then have a read on what you ideally bring along.

What do we expect from a Principal Power Electronics Reliability Engineer at Lightyear?
In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear pro-activity, professionalism, communication, and adaptability are crucial. In addition, we are looking for people with an ambitious attitude who learn from the past (tried and tested) and who strive to set new standards when needed. Therefore, you bring along:

  • Master of Science or a Ph.D. in Power Electronics, Material Science, Solid Mechanics, Physics, or similar
  • 10+ years of experience
  • At least a basic understanding of electronics
  • Experience with accelerated environmental testing, reliability testing, and reliability standards.
  • Experience with empirical data collection, statistical data analysis, and reliability statistics
  • Fundamental understanding of the relationship between microstructure versus mechanical and physical properties of materials used in electronic packaging
  • Experience with scripting and programming (Python/Matlab/Julia)
  • Experience with and understanding of FEM

On a personal level, you are someone who is both result driven and analytical. You're accurate, you have a systematic approach and you're creative.
