Working at Lightyear is a unique experience. You get the opportunity to work for a company with a pure and meaningful mission. A mission that will make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.

What will you do as a Manufacturing Engineer - High Volume?
Let’s start with some context. As you might know we’ve been working on researching, designing and engineering our first Solar Electric Vehicle: Lightyear 0. While we’re bringing this first model into manufacturing, we’re working on a next model in parallel: Lightyear Two. And that’s where it becomes challenging.

While Lightyear 0 will be a statement car, being built in a relatively low amount, Lightyear Two is all about bringing clean mobility to everyone resulting in a high-volume car. As you’re experienced with manufacturing cars you’ll probably know what type of challenges this will bring. On top of that, you should realize that everything needs to be built within the company. Luckily we’ve partnered up with Valmet Automotive, who’s our manufacturing partner bringing along decades of experience (video for more context).

So, given that context of bringing our first model into production while preparing for our second model in advance, you’ll step into the manufacturing team which is essentially the interface between our engineering teams and our operations team. Ultimately, to make sure that we’ll manufacture our cars as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

Within the team and the given context, it’s your personal job mission to both improve and co-build manufacturing processes. This will include;

  • Supporting the transition of a product from concept to pilot line production and eventually into mass manufacturing;
  • Develop and modify existing line layouts, processes and fixtures to improve material flow, waste reduction, and ergonomics by utilising Lean Manufacturing best practices;
  • Analyse, design and optimise new production processes;
  • Partner with Equipment Engineering to ensure equipment cycle time objectives are properly balanced by the needs of the production workforce.;
  • Define a project’s scope, manage spend against the budget, coordinate with outside vendors, and oversee the installation of new equipment to ensure all requirements are met;
  • Influence design engineers and production associates with recommendations to incorporate alternate vehicle design features or assembly techniques that enhance the manufacturability of the product;
  • Maintain and control Engineering changes and documentation;
