Which team will you become part of?
Within Lightyear we want to utilize the sun as best as possible, and to achieve this it is important for our customers to understand when and how to park their vehicle. Within the team you will join, Long Term Strategy, we are working on the ability to predict whether a vehicle will be optimally placed/parked for the incoming solar rays. It would be interesting to compare the predicted solar yield with the actual solar yield and by comparing and analyzing, possible insights could be gained such as:

  1. The vehicle is probably always parked in the same street with trees, which for example impacts the solar yield between 14:00 and 16:00 every day.
  2. Whether the solar roof is dirty.
  3. The impact of temperature and wind (cooling) on the solar yield.

In order to make these predictions, Lightyear is developing a weather prediction model to compare the weather information to the sensor readings within the car. This model is composed of multiple data sources which are used to get to the most accurate weather prediction necessary. Aside from the applications mentioned above, weather plays an important role for solar cars, and this model has a large impact on many services Lightyear might offer. 

Your personal mission
The end result of the study would consists out of (at least) the following:

  1. Incorporating more data sources to improve the resilience of the weather model.
  2. Improving the existing framework for data collection and aggregation.
  3. Assist with increasing precision of the predicted weather values both in resolution as well as accuracy through interpolation or other machine learning methods.

Requirements in order to achieve your personal mission
Be aware, being an intern at Lightyear isn’t just an internship. You’ll be approached as an actual engineer and that requires some skills and being able to take responsibility. Especially given the fact that you’ll join a scale-up where little is set in stone. Therefore, it’s key that you can relate to the following things:

  • You’ve proven that you’re strong both theoretically and pragmatic. For instance, you’ve been part of a student team (such as Hyperloop, Solar team, Robocup), did other extracurricular activities, worked in a start-up, you did an outstanding internship or you do sports at a semi-professional level. At Lightyear, we highly value this.

  • You are currently enrolled in an MSc. Engineering related education, i.e. Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering.

  • You would like to start your internship in November 2022, with a duration of 5 months.

  • You have a strong base in mathematics and programming.

  • You have experience with Python, and object oriented programming.

  • Experience with PySpark, data engineering or machine learning is an added benefit but not a requirement.

  • You have a collaborative spirit eager to learn and share ideas.

  • You have a proactive mentality looking for opportunities to improve yourself and the company.

  • You have the ability to communicate your abilities and present abstract concepts.

  • You strongly identify yourself with our bigger mission: clean mobility for everyone.
