What will you do as an Electro-chemical battery expert?
You will become part of Lightyear’s electrical engineering domain and will work a lot for the research team focussing on energy efficiency in the broad sense and engineering teams focussing on the design of battery packs. We will deliver Lightyear cars in high volume around 2024-2025 and are currently working on converting our stakeholder needs into vehicle requirements. In parallel, the research team is doing a lot of preliminary investigations for technologies to be used in this vehicle. One of which is in building knowledge of and around battery cells.

In the role of Electro-chemical battery expert, you will be responsible for developing the knowledge at Lightyear around battery cells. In the group of researchers, you will be the expert on battery cells, BMSses, and possibly other energy storage systems. Your focus will be on optimizing the modeling, testing, selection, and possibly design of battery cells for optimizing e.g. the energy density of the complete solution while keeping an eye on the performance and cost through cost functions. In researching you will have a keen eye on the nonfunctional targets as well: manufacturability, energy loss, maintainability, serviceability, etc.

When the research targets are in place, you will also be responsible for guiding architects and engineers in designing the battery packs. You will be the expert on battery cells and join the design reviews and evaluate test strategies and test cases. While the new prototype car is integrated and tested you will monitor its characteristics and performance. You will drive corrective measures if the system is out of spec.

While the battery system is your prime focus, your role isn’t limited to these framed tasks and responsibilities:

  • Asses performance and functionality
  • Have an eye for optimization
  • Define, deduct and use cost functions
  • Quantify the performance of different architecture choices and optimize architecture choices according to the cost function
  • Have an eye for durability and reliability
  • Analyse use cases to define electrical characteristics
  • Analyse use cases for maintenance and production to define electrical characteristics
  • Develop models in Matlab/Simulink/PLECS
  • Analyse data in Matlab/Simulink/PLECS
  • Define how to verify models
  • Verify models
  • Make tradeoffs in design
  • Verify designs (on paper)
  • Lead multidisciplinary design tradeoffs
  • Identify multi-disciplinary design tradeoffs
  • Support creating functional safety architectures (HARA, Technical Safety Concept, ASIL decomposition, FMEA, FTA, etc) (ISO26262)
  • Coach test engineers in their electro-chemistry skills to make sure proper data is being collected

What do we expect from an Electro-chemical battery expert?
In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear; pro-activity, professionalism, communication, and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the ‘tried and tested’ of the future! You thrive on working team-based, but working independently every now and then shouldn’t be an issue. Furthermore, we think the following is needed to fulfill the role of an Electro-chemical battery expert:

  • A master's or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering (Electrochemistry), or Energy Technology
  • 3+ years experience as a researcher or engineer in Electrochemistry, battery research/development, and/or battery cells

Besides the above-listed tasks and responsibilities knowledgeable in:

  • Electrochemistry
  • Electrochemical characterization
  • Material science
  • Industrialization for high volume

On the practical side you have experience in:

  • The ability to solve problems mathematically in order to find optimums
  • Experienced in requirements management.

Having knowledge of and/or experience in the following is a plus:

  • ECE R100 (for approval of road electric vehicle, general and energy storage safety)
  • Working hands-on
  • Coach junior engineers to become senior engineers
