What will you do as Electrical Engineer - at Solar?
You will become part of Lightyear’s electrical engineering domain which is a very diverse team and will work on the Layer project. Layer is the project where we develop our solar system for the Lightyear One and we are investigating other vehicles as well. The solar system consists of automotive-grade solar panels (VIPV), power converters, and (energy) management systems. These new generation solar systems are developed at Lightyear internally and are one of the key technologies in creating a super-efficient solar car.

In the role of Electrical Engineer - Solar you will be responsible for creating electrical and electronics designs for solar electronics, like MPPTs, solar panels, controllers, and the system architecture. You will work together with power electronics engineers, control engineers, mechanical engineers, etc. Occasionally if you want, you may also work on improving the (prototype) production process for example by automating stages of the assembly and end-of-line testing. Also, you will work together with our integration and verification team to help them integrate solar electronics in prototype vehicles. Since you will be in charge of your own career path, your tasks will be evolving around your interests. While electrical and electronics engineering is your prime focus, your role isn’t limited to these framed tasks and responsibilities:

  • Make scripts in Matlab
  • Develop models in LTSpice
  • Develop models in Matlab/Simulink/PLECS
  • Analyse data in Matlab/Simulink/PLECS
  • Design electrical circuits and architectures or contribute to architectural concepts based on requirements
  • Take part in design reviews and verification
  • Quantify the performance of different architecture choices and optimize architecture choices according to the cost function
  • Check on (electrical) integration feasibility
  • Take part in guiding manufacturing

What do we expect from an Electrical Engineer - Solar?
In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear; pro-activity, professionalism, communication, and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the ‘tried and tested’ of the future! You thrive on working team-based, but working independently every now and then shouldn’t be an issue. Furthermore, we think the following is needed to fulfill the role of Electrical Engineer - Solar:

  •  A master's or bachelor's in electrical and or electronics engineering
  • 1+ year of experience as an engineer in electrical or electronics design
  • Besides the above-listed tasks and responsibilities you are knowledgeable in:
          • Broad Electrical Engineering
          • Electronics
  • Very familiar with or quickly to understand:
        • Matlab
        • Simulink
        • PCB design tooling (Altium preferred)
  • On the practical side you have experience in:
        • The ability to solve problems mathematically in order to find optimums
        • Create schematics according to (EU) standards (e.g. ISO60617)- Data analysis in Matlab
        • Matlab script development skills
        • Electronics model development in Simulink
        • Simulink script development skills
        • Define clear interfaces and negotiate them with stakeholders
        • Experience within complex multidisciplinary systems in which you were responsible for multiple (sub-)systems.
        • Working hands-on
  • Having knowledge of and/or experience in the following is a plus:
        • Requirement engineering
        • Python  or similar programming languages
        • Requirements management software (Jama preferred)
        • Spice simulation software (LTspice preferred)
