What will you do as Aero Thermal Engineer?

As an Aero Thermal Engineer you will become part of the aerodynamics domain which is part of our bigger engineering triangle. The aerodynamics domain at Lightyear has the challenging objective to design the most aerodynamic, low drag vehicle that is currently on the road. We achieve this by creating a new standard in which aerodynamics, styling and technology go hand in hand. However within that context, it’s key to optimize every component that is at the intersection of aerodynamics and thermal engineering.

While you become part of the aerodynamics domain you’ll primarily work on the aerodynamic systems, subsystems and modules that interface with our thermal management system. To give you an idea; what will happen to the thermal behaviour of the car if we close the grill to improve the aerodynamics?

While those are the type of questions you crack your brains on, you’ll focus on a wide variety of tasks. To give you a glimpse of what it’s like to work as our Aero Thermal Engineer we’d like to give you some insights. As many other days, you will start with a daily stand-up. This time you’ll meet with the exterior team in order to optimize the airflow through the front heat exchangers. Afterwards, you will share your latest CFD results regarding the new air duct geometry that you proposed last week. Good news, the results show a nice uniform distribution of air across the heat exchanger and less aerodynamic drag compared to the old design. However, there is one particular optimization that you need to go through. So, immediately after the meeting you start changing the geometry and prepare the mesh for the simulations. Hopefully you’re able to prepare everything before lunch which enables you to run the simulation during the afternoon and night.

After lunch it’s time to get into the lab to discuss the test setup for validating your models together with your colleagues from testing and proto. Together, you discuss the required equipment that needs to be ordered to precisely measure the flow resistance through the heat exchangers and their thermal performance. Right afterwards, you run into Procurement to find out the status of the parts you ordered last week.

The remainder of the day you work on reporting the study you did on the brake system. And then there is one last meeting before you need to go home. It is the Aerodynamics domain meeting. In this meeting you will share your learnings from an article you found about a new approach to couple CFD and thermal models that is both accurate and computationally efficient. All and all, it was a day that was as smooth as the aerodynamics of Lightyear One!

So, what are you actually responsible for? Please know, that your job will include, but isn’t limited to:

  • Perform CFD and thermal analysis.
  • Ensure that product design and performance meets technical and functional requirements.
  • Support multidisciplinary engineering teams in product design and development activities.
  • Provide accurate and detailed reports of CFD results.
  • Collaborate with our testing team in developing and executing design verification plans and mechanical testing methods.
  • Provide technical expertise in problem resolution, cost reduction, and quality improvement.

What do we expect from our Aero Thermal Engineer at Lightyear?

In order to succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear, pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. We are looking for people with an ambitious attitude who learn from the past (tried and tested) and who strive to set new standards when needed. You are flexible and can work under pressure. Furthermore, we are looking for these traits:

  • Master degree in Aerodynamics, fluid dynamics or thermal fluidics
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Solid understanding of heat transfer in simulations
  • You’re an experienced Linux user
  • CFD knowledge (preferrably OpenFoam, Fluent is also considered)
  • Skilled in Python, bash and C++
  • It’s considered a tremendous plus if you bring along some validation and testing experience

Furthermore, you can be described as someone who eagerly wants to work multidisciplinary. You bring along a high level of autonomy and you’re super conscientious.
